Google Rolls Out Gemini Nano AI Model and More in June Pixel Drop

Google is introducing several new features and updates to its Pixel lineup as part of the June Pixel drop, including the much-anticipated Gemini Nano AI model for Pixel 8 and 8a users. This update includes enhancements across various Pixel devices, including phones, watches, and tablets.

Gemini Nano AI Model

Gemini Nano AI Model Access: Pixel 8 and 8a users will be able to access the Gemini Nano AI model as a developer option. Initially teased in March, this model will provide detailed summaries of transcriptions in the Recorder app. However, Google has not elaborated on other specific features the AI model will enable.

Pixel Phone Updates

Enhanced Recorder App:

  • Speaker Name Detection: The Recorder app can now detect speaker names and export transcripts to text files or Google Docs on Pixel 6 or newer devices.
  • Detailed Summaries: Leveraging the Gemini Nano AI model, the Recorder app will offer more detailed transcription summaries.

Display Port Connectivity:

  • Support for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a: The update includes support for the Display Port standard through the USB-C port, allowing users to watch content on a larger screen.

Reverse Phone Number Lookup:

  • Call Log Integration: Users can search for unknown numbers from the call log. It remains unclear whether Google is utilizing its Caller ID database or another third-party database. This feature is similar to services offered by apps like Truecaller.

Find My Device:

  • Extended Functionality: On the Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a, the Find My Device feature will now locate a phone even when it’s switched off for up to 23 hours.

Camera Improvements:

  • Manual Lens Picking: Available on Pixel 6 Pro, 7 Pro, and Pixel Fold, this feature allows users to manually select a lens. If disabled, the camera will automatically choose a lens based on the focused objects in the frame.
  • Enhanced HDR+ Support: On Pixel 6 and newer devices, HDR+ photo support will automatically detect the best shot when the shutter button is pressed.

Pixel Watch and Tablet Updates

Pixel Watch 2:

  • Fall and Crash Detection: The Pixel Watch 2 will now include fall and crash detection features, enhancing user safety.

Pixel Tablet:

  • Doorbell Notifications: The Pixel tablet will now support doorbell notifications, providing more integrated smart home functionality.

Overall, the June Pixel drop brings a range of enhancements aimed at improving user experience across multiple Google devices. With the introduction of the Gemini Nano AI model, users can expect more intelligent and detailed interactions, particularly in transcription tasks.
