The United States of America (USA) and Nigeria are set to explore potential partnership opportunities in the digital economy, emerging technology, and the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to strengthen economic ties and foster deeper collaborations between the two countries in these crucial areas.

High-level U.S. government officials will participate in a conference in Abuja under the auspices of the U.S.-Nigeria Bi-National Commission. This conference will provide a platform for discussions on the digital economy, emerging technology, and AI advancements.

During the closing ceremony of a workshop on National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, Mr. Arthur Brown, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving robust, resilient, and inclusive economic growth. The U.S. is ready to collaborate with Nigeria as equal partners in areas such as talent development, infrastructure, research, and innovation. Mr. Brown also praised Nigeria’s support for a United Nations resolution on AI and pledged continued partnership with Nigeria on the economy.

Nigeria has demonstrated a growing commitment to AI and emerging technologies with the establishment of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) in November 2020. This aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy 2020 – 2030, which identifies AI as a key pillar of the country’s digital economy.

Since its establishment, the NCAIR has launched programs to impart coding and machine learning skills to children, aligning with Nigeria’s efforts to integrate AI into education. Additionally, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been directed to provide AI research grants to tertiary institutions to drive innovation.

In March 2023, Nigeria drafted a National AI policy to further solidify its commitment to AI. Initiatives like the 3 million Technical Talents (3MTT) program and the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme (NAIRS) aim to train young people in AI and support AI startups and researchers.

The upcoming discussions between the USA and Nigeria offer an opportunity to exchange knowledge, expertise, and best practices in the digital economy, emerging technology, and AI. By aligning AI governance and ensuring safe and transparent AI deployment, the partnership seeks to drive economic growth and innovation in both nations.
