Boston Dynamics has long been synonymous with jaw-dropping robot demonstrations, from the hydraulics-powered Atlas robot’s impressive dancing and parkour feats to its latest creation, the all-electric and completely redesigned Atlas.
The All New Atlas marks Boston Dynamics’ debut into the realm of all-electric humanoid robots, boasting greater strength and agility compared to its predecessors. However, what truly captivates in the introduction video is the robot’s remarkably human-like physique.
Unlike the previous hydraulics-based Atlas, which sported a somewhat industrial appearance, the new Atlas resembles Tesla’s Optimus and Figure AI’s Figure 01, positioning Boston Dynamics once again at the forefront of the humanoid robotics competition. Yet, it’s not just the robot’s aesthetics that astound; it’s its fluid movements.
The video opens with the new Atlas lying motionless on the ground, legs splayed out. With a graceful motion, it lifts its legs and rolls them back into a position seemingly impossible for the average human. Rising from the floor, Atlas stands with its chest, head, and legs initially turned away from the camera. Then, in a mesmerizing sequence, the head, featuring a circular glass panel for a face, rotates to face forward, followed by each leg swiveling at the hip as Atlas effortlessly strides forward. Finally, the torso completes a full spin, aligning the entire New Atlas to face the camera, leaving viewers in awe of its capabilities.
